Change Starts With a Spark
We only use the language of our oppressors to express what has long been suppressed.
To say that history will record 2020 as a year of unexpected changes would be an understatement. In a time where a foreign virus has split us all apart, it’s interesting how the murder of George Floyd is bringing everyone together in solidarity. As we’re still adjusting to the devastating consequences of the coronavirus, now the parallel pandemic of systemic racism has come back with a vengeance. Not that it ever left in the first place, but our tolerance for it has reached an all-time low. We have long carried the weight of apathy and discrimination on our skin, so retaliation is the only response we can give to a system that continues to abuse us.
When the nation burns down because of the fires America started long ago, don’t call us pyromaniacs. We only use the language of our oppressors to express what has long been suppressed. Our cause is not rooted in destruction, but in deconstructing the institutions that weaponized drugs, police brutality, stereotypes, and unfair standards in all sectors of life. Now we breathe fire to show everyone that our lungs do matter.
The unjustified death of George Floyd should inspire us to continually battle the worst parts…
